Water Treatment
Periodically, Union County conducts a routine Water Quality Preventative Maintenance Program to provide high-quality, great-tasting water. This program involves temporarily switching water disinfectants from chloramines to chlorine within the distribution systems. Chloramine is a very stable and long-lasting disinfectant in water systems. As a maintenance activity to optimize water quality of the distribution system, the water plant will switch to free chlorine for disinfection for a period of about one month, or until the distribution system has been completely flushed for the following reasons:
- Remove any biofilm and bacteria from the water distribution system pipes;
- Reduce the formation of nitrates and nitrites (nitrification);
- Reduce any taste and odor complaints;
- This maintenance process is recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (NCDENR).
After distribution system flushing is completed, the water plant will resume disinfection utilizing chloramines.
Damaging Items to Pipes
Please be mindful of what you are pouring into sewer pipes. Fats, oils, and grease (especially from cooking) can cause damage to sewer pipes. These repairs can cost customers an excessive amount of money. For more detailed information regarding items that should not be put in drains, please refer to the Guide to What You Can and Can’t Flush and Put Down the Drain.
Leak Adjustments
If you have had a water leak repaired, save all plumbing receipts or invoices and submit to Customer Service for review. Depending on the nature of the leak, it’s possible that an adjustment can be done on the account.
